Same-day crowns in Gold River can restore a damaged tooth in a single appointment, helping eligible patients avoid a temporary crown and a second visit. At Gold River Smiles, we use CEREC technology to digitally scan, design, and create ceramic crowns in our office.
This FAQ explains how CEREC same-day crowns work, who may be a candidate, what to expect during your appointment, and how to care for your new restoration.
What Are Same-Day Crowns?
A same-day crown restores a tooth that has been weakened by decay, damage, or a large filling. Unlike a traditional crown process, which may require a temporary crown and a second appointment, CEREC allows us to create the permanent restoration in a single visit.
The process uses digital impressions, computer-aided design, and on-site milling. After your tooth is scanned, the crown is designed digitally and milled from ceramic in the office.
For many patients, that means fewer appointments, no temporary crown, and a completed restoration before leaving the office.
Am I a Candidate for a Same-Day Crown?
You may be a candidate for a same-day crown if you have a cracked tooth, significant decay, or a large or broken filling, and enough healthy tooth structure remains to support a crown.
We evaluate your bite, tooth structure, and overall oral health before recommending treatment. Patients with complex bite concerns or extensive tooth loss may require additional planning or an alternative restorative option.
Our team uses digital X-rays and OverJet AI as part of the diagnostic process. If a single-visit crown is not the best choice for your situation, we will explain your alternatives.
How Do CEREC Same-Day Crowns Work?
CEREC combines digital scanning, computer-aided design, and an in-office milling unit to create ceramic crowns.
After preparing the tooth, we take a digital scan of your tooth and bite. The crown is then designed using CAD software and milled in our office. Once the restoration is ready, we check the fit, make any necessary adjustments, and cement it into place.
Because the crown is completed in the office, you do not need to wear a temporary crown between appointments.
What Happens During a Same-Day Crown Appointment?
A typical appointment includes several steps:
- A digital scan of your tooth and bite
- Digital crown design using CAD software
- On-site milling and finishing of the ceramic restoration
- Final fitting and bite adjustments
- Permanent cementation of the crown
The visit usually takes two hours or less.
We also offer nitrous oxide for patients who feel anxious about dental treatment. Comfort amenities include pillows, weighted blankets, warm towels, chapstick, streaming TV, sparkling water, and free Wi-Fi while your restoration is being made.
How Long Do Same-Day Crowns Last?
A properly placed ceramic crown can last for many years, but its lifespan depends on factors such as oral hygiene, diet, bite forces, and teeth grinding.
You can help protect your crown by:
- Brushing twice daily with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
- Flossing once a day, especially around the crown margins
- Avoiding very hard foods or objects, such as ice and hard candy
- Wearing a mouthguard at night if you grind or clench your teeth
- Attending routine dental checkups so we can monitor the crown and the surrounding tooth
We will review care instructions with you after your crown is placed.
Do Same-Day Crowns Hurt?
Local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable while the tooth is prepared. We can also provide nitrous oxide for patients who feel nervous about treatment.
Some temporary tenderness or sensitivity can occur after the appointment and generally improves as the tooth settles.
How Long Does a Same-Day Crown Appointment Take?
From the digital scan through final cementation, a same-day crown appointment usually takes two hours or less.
Because the restoration is designed and milled in our office, many patients can complete the entire crown process in one visit rather than returning for a second appointment.
How Much Do Same-Day Crowns Cost?
The cost of a same-day crown varies based on the tooth, restoration, and complexity of treatment.
We will provide an estimate based on your individual treatment plan so you can understand the expected cost before moving forward.
Can Children Get Same-Day Crowns?
Children often have different restorative needs than adults. Depending on the tooth and situation, another pediatric treatment may be more appropriate.
Our team will evaluate your child’s needs and recommend the treatment option that best supports their oral health.
